This workshop will allow educators to apply these ideas effectively in their classrooms and current units to help their students become more engaged and motivated learners.
We will learn about integrating the first toolkit from Building Thinking Classrooms, using Science of Reading comprehension strategies to fit the new ELA standards.
Our workshop goal is to create authentic tasks that allow students to come up with their own answers rather than choose from provided answers and demonstrate an authentic purpose for reading. After providing an overview of the Science of Reading Comprehension and Building Thinking Classrooms’ first three moves (Liljedahl,2020), we will focus on reviewing texts to build authentic comprehension activities that will encourage students to:
-Solve real-world problems
-Meet design challenges
-Explore abstract questions
-Conduct investigations
-Take positions on issues
